The Suite Room with Valley View trades the close-up of the mountains for distance. Large windows frame a panorama of lush valley and rolling terrain, and because the ground falls away in front of the room there is a great deal more sky in it than you expect.

The view

Green, and then more green, layered back until it goes blue. It changes constantly — through the day, and completely between seasons. After the monsoon the valley is at its most saturated; by the dry months it opens out and you can see much further. The private balcony is the place to watch it from, particularly at sunset.

The room

Elegant interiors, plush bedding, a king size bed and a generous living space alongside the bedroom. Air conditioning, free high-speed Wi-Fi, a mini fridge, an electric kettle, a wardrobe with luggage rack, and an attached bathroom with twenty-four hour hot water. The suite is designed to feel open rather than enclosed, which is the point of the view.

Who it suits

Couples, families and extended stays. If you are choosing between this and the mountain view suite, the difference is character rather than quality — mountains feel close and sheltering, the valley feels expansive. Guests who want to sit and read for an afternoon usually prefer this one.

Vellamunda is in northern Wayanad, within reach of Banasura Sagar Dam, Kuruva Island, Thirunelly Temple and Pakshipathalam, with the rest of the district's waterfalls, caves and trekking routes a comfortable day out. Back at the resort there is a swimming pool, a restaurant, an outdoor BBQ, a campfire in the evenings and a kids' park.
