Chembra Peak
The highest peak in Wayanad, best known for the heart-shaped lake on the way up which is said never to dry. The summit opens onto the Western Ghats in every direction.
Chembra is the highest point in Wayanad, and the trek up it is the one most people come to do. Partway along the ridge lies a small heart-shaped tarn — Hridaya Saras — which local tradition holds has never dried up, and which is the reason for most of the photographs you will have seen.
Above the lake the grassland opens out and the ridge runs on toward the summit, with the Nilgiris visible to the east on a clear day and the whole of the Wayanad plateau behind you.
Before you go
Access is controlled by the forest department: a permit is required, daily numbers are capped, and the trail is closed during the dry months when the grassland is a fire risk. Confirm it is open before you plan around it. Start early — the cloud usually comes in by late morning.

A protected river delta on the Kabini, made up of evergreen forest and quiet channels. Reached by raft, and closed during the monsoon when the river runs high.

One of Kerala's most ancient temples, set below the Brahmagiri hills and surrounded by forest and mountain streams. Known for its spiritual significance and its stillness.
Pakshipathalam
A cave and birdwatching trail deep in the Brahmagiri range, reached on a forest trek. Best for early risers and serious birders.
Edakkal Caves
Prehistoric rock carvings believed to be over 6,000 years old, depicting human figures, animals and symbols. A short trek up leads to wide views over the hills.
Soochipara Waterfalls
Also called Sentinel Rock Falls — a three-tier waterfall enclosed by dense forest, at its most dramatic during and just after the monsoon.
