Pakshipathalam

Pakshipathalam is a set of deep rock caves high in the Brahmagiri range, formed by enormous boulders piled against one another. Getting there is a steep trek through dense forest from near Thirunelly, and it is the trek rather than the caves that most people remember.

The name means something close to "the underworld of birds", and the upper reaches are good ground for birdwatching — the forest here is thick, undisturbed and full of sound. From the top the Brahmagiri ridge opens out toward Coorg.

Before you go

This one needs planning. The route lies inside a reserve, so a forest department permit and an accompanying guide are required, and numbers are limited. It is a genuine climb over uneven rock, not a walk — proper shoes, an early start, and water. We can help arrange it if you tell us a day or two ahead.
