Thirunelly Temple
One of Kerala's most ancient temples, set below the Brahmagiri hills and surrounded by forest and mountain streams. Known for its spiritual significance and its stillness.
Thirunelly is one of the oldest temples in Kerala, standing on the lower slopes of the Brahmagiri hills with forest on three sides. It is dedicated to Vishnu, and the stone hall is carried on rows of plain granite pillars — the architecture is austere, and the setting does the rest of the work.
A short walk from the temple, the Papanasini stream comes down off the hills. Pilgrims perform rites for their ancestors there, which is why the temple is sometimes called the Kashi of the South. Even on a busy day the stream is a quiet place.
What to expect
This is a working temple, not a monument. Dress modestly, and expect the usual conventions on footwear and photography inside. The road in from Mananthavady runs through forest, and elephants cross it often enough that it is worth not driving it after dark.

Banasura Sagar Dam
The largest earthen dam in India, held between misty hills with a scatter of small islands across the reservoir. Boating, photography and unhurried sightseeing.
Kuruva Island
A protected river delta on the Kabini, made up of evergreen forest and quiet channels. Reached by raft, and closed during the monsoon when the river runs high.
Pakshipathalam
A cave and birdwatching trail deep in the Brahmagiri range, reached on a forest trek. Best for early risers and serious birders.
Edakkal Caves
Prehistoric rock carvings believed to be over 6,000 years old, depicting human figures, animals and symbols. A short trek up leads to wide views over the hills.
Chembra Peak
The highest peak in Wayanad, best known for the heart-shaped lake on the way up which is said never to dry. The summit opens onto the Western Ghats in every direction.
Soochipara Waterfalls
Also called Sentinel Rock Falls — a three-tier waterfall enclosed by dense forest, at its most dramatic during and just after the monsoon.
