Pookode Lake
A calm freshwater lake ringed by forest and hills, with pedal boating and easy walking trails. An uncomplicated afternoon for families.
Pookode is a small natural freshwater lake ringed by evergreen forest, sitting in a hollow with wooded hills close on every side. It is shallow, still, and easy — which is exactly why it works for families and for anyone who has had enough of trekking for one trip.
Pedal boats go out onto the lake, there is a freshwater aquarium and a children's play area beside it, and a handicrafts and spice shop at the entrance that is a reasonable place to buy cardamom and pepper.
What to expect
A flat, paved path runs right around the water and takes twenty minutes at an amble. It gets busy at weekends and during school holidays. This is the least demanding of the Wayanad sights and the easiest to fit into a half day.

Banasura Sagar Dam
The largest earthen dam in India, held between misty hills with a scatter of small islands across the reservoir. Boating, photography and unhurried sightseeing.
Kuruva Island
A protected river delta on the Kabini, made up of evergreen forest and quiet channels. Reached by raft, and closed during the monsoon when the river runs high.
Thirunelly Temple
One of Kerala's most ancient temples, set below the Brahmagiri hills and surrounded by forest and mountain streams. Known for its spiritual significance and its stillness.
Pakshipathalam
A cave and birdwatching trail deep in the Brahmagiri range, reached on a forest trek. Best for early risers and serious birders.
Edakkal Caves
Prehistoric rock carvings believed to be over 6,000 years old, depicting human figures, animals and symbols. A short trek up leads to wide views over the hills.
Chembra Peak
The highest peak in Wayanad, best known for the heart-shaped lake on the way up which is said never to dry. The summit opens onto the Western Ghats in every direction.
